Chelsea are the nouveau superpower of English football. They won 12 major trophies between 1997 and 2010, three times as many as they claimed in the 92 years before that. Most of those successes came after the club was purchased by the Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2003, a move that kickstarted the wave of foreign ownership in the Premier League. Having been founded in 1905, they are one of the younger Premier League sides. They had a couple of short spells in the top flight either side of the First World War, and lost the FA Cup final to Sheffield United in 1915, but they did not really establish themselves until the Thirties: promotion in 1930 began a run of 31 consecutive years in Division One. During that time, under the management of Ted Drake, they won their first league title in 1955. It was a remarkable triumph that came out of nothing: Chelsea had finished in the bottom half of the table in eight of the previous nine seasons and would finish 16th the following year.

A brief history of Manchester City…

Formed: 1880

Previous names: Ardwick FC

Admitted to Football League: 1892

European Cup Winners’ Cup: 1969-70

First Division 2

Second Division 7

FA Cup: 5

League Cup: 2

Manchester City’s history can be summed up by one statistic: they are the only English champions to be relegated the following season. It is an apt reflection of a club who have lurched violently between the sublime and the ridiculous, and who have often seemed to have tragicomedy in their genes.

The club began life at St Mark’s (West Gorton) in 1880, before changing their name to Ardwick AFC and then, in 1894, Manchester City. The newly named club jumped between Division One and Division Two, but almost did the Double in 1904. City won the FA Cup and were runners-up in the league. The next two years were marked by allegations of financial malpractice, and 17 players were suspended in 1906. At this stage City were playing at Hyde Road, but a fire in 1920 precipitated an eventual move to Maine Road. There was a two-year spell in the second tier, but City were far more successful in the Thirties: they lost the FA Cup final in 1933, won it in 1934 and then became champions for the first time in 1937. Incredibly, they were relegated the next season; even more incredibly, they went down despite being the league’s top scorers.
